United Way is pleased to serve as the program administrator for an AmeriCorps*VISTA project granted to the organization by the Corporation for National Service. The United Way of Tompkins County Rural Service Fellowship Program began in January 2003 and its goals are to:

  • Assess the health and human service needs of the un-served and underserved residents of the County;
  • Develop outreach and education efforts to promote service delivery to these residents and;
  • Create a network of services, resource material and trained volunteers and staff to sustain these efforts
United Way and nine of its member organizations will host an AmeriCorps*VISTA for three years. In the program's first year VISTAs recruited 94 community volunteers, raised $21,000 in in-kind donations, and held 200 outreach sessions in Tompkins County. Each site has developed a work plan to address a critical organizational and community need. The host sites for the Program are:

  • The Advocacy Center of Tompkins County
  • Day Care & Child Development Council
  • Catholic Charities of Tompkins County
  • Cornell Cooperative Extension
  • Family and Children’s Service
  • Finger Lakes Independence Center (FLIC)
  • Human Services Coalition, Information & Referral
  • The Mental Health Association in Tompkins County
  • Offender Aid and Restoration (OAR)
United Way volunteers and staff are very excited about this collaboration and the resources it will generate for Tompkins County residents and organizations.
