Community Grants

T. Merrell Shipherd Flexible Fund

This fund was established to honor T. Merrell Shipherd, former Director of United Way of Tompkins County, who, throughout his life, worked to bring people together to find effective solutions to community challenges. The purpose of this funding is to provide financial support to quality programming and services, to address current, new or emerging needs in the community, to support efforts to improve organizational efficiency and encourage collaborations such as mergers and service delivery joint ventures.


Please review the attached Grant Criteria . All United Way Partner and Affiliate Member organizations are eligible to apply for Flexible Funds. Non-United Way Member organizations may apply in partnership/collaboration with United Way of Tompkins County Member Organizations.


T. Merrell Shipherd Flexible Fund Grants for 2009 totaled $30,500 and were awarded to the following organizations.

 

Catholic Charities of Tompkins/Tioga - Immigrant Services Program ($5,000)

 

Franziska Racker Centers - Supporting Success ($2,300)

 

Greater Ithaca Activities Center - Teen Late Night Program ($8,000)

 

Groton Community Council - Women's Community Center ($2,000)

 

Human Services Coalition - 2-1-1 Tompkins/Information and Referral ($2,189)

 

Lifelong - Kiln for Clay Class ($1,500)

 

Opportunities, Alternatives and Resources - Expanded Transition Program ($4,500)

 

Suicide Prevention & Crisis Service - 21st Century Information Technology for the Crisisline ($3,011)

 

Women's Opportunity Center - Non-Traditional Scholarship Program ($2,000)
